Google Business Profile in Malaysia and India

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that puts your business on Google Maps and in local search results. In Malaysia and India, claim it at business.google.com, verify it, fill in every field honestly, and keep earning reviews. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.

    How Google ranks local results

Google says local results are mainly based on three things. Its local ranking guide describes them as relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including links to your site and your reviews).

You can't change your distance from a customer. You can make the profile more relevant and the business more prominent, and those two are what this guide covers.

Google is also blunt about shortcuts: there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone selling guaranteed Maps rankings is selling something Google says doesn't exist.

Setting up your Google Business Profile

Most of the work is getting the basics exactly right. In order:

    1. Search for your business first. Google may already have a listing created from maps data or customer edits. Claim it rather than creating a duplicate.
    2. Use your real-world name. Google's guidelines say the name should match what customers see on your storefront, and that adding unnecessary information to the name isn't permitted and can get the profile suspended. "Klinik Gigi Sri Petaling" is fine if that's the signboard; "Klinik Gigi Sri Petaling Best Dentist KL" is not.
    3. Pick the most specific primary category. "Dental clinic", not "Health". Add secondary categories only for services you provide today.
    4. Address or service area. If customers come to you, show the address. If you go to them (contractors, cleaners, home tutors), Google says you should hide your address and set a service area instead.
    5. Hours, including holidays. Set special hours for Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Diwali and other public holidays. Nothing loses trust faster than a closed shutter during listed hours.
    6. Phone and website. Use a number someone answers. Link to the most relevant page on your site, not always the home page.

    Verifying your profile

Verification proves you're allowed to manage the business, and Google says verified profiles are more likely to appear in results. Google's verification help page lists several methods, and which ones you're offered depends on your business type and location:

    • Phone call or text message
    • Email
    • A video recording of your business
    • A live video call with Google support
    • A postcard mailed to your address

Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30. Google's review after you submit can take up to 5 business days. If your website is already verified in Google Search Console, verification can sometimes be instant.

    Write for how customers search

Relevance depends on matching the words people use, and in both markets those words aren't always English.

In Malaysia, people search in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, often mixing them: "klinik gigi near me", "aircond service Shah Alam", "补习中心 Puchong". In India, searches in Hindi, Tamil and other regional languages are common, and Google's AI Mode now answers in several Indian languages too.

Write your description and services list in the language most of your customers use, and mention your area naturally. Don't stuff keywords into the business name; put them where they belong, in services, products and posts.

Reviews: how to get them without breaking the rules

Reviews feed prominence, and they're what most customers read before calling. Ask every satisfied customer, at the moment they're happiest, with a direct link to your review form. A WhatsApp message after a completed job works well in both markets.

Stay inside Google's content policy. It prohibits offering incentives such as payment, discounts or free services for reviews, and selectively asking only happy customers while discouraging negative reviews. Staff writing reviews for their employer falls under its conflict-of-interest rule.

Reply to every review, good and bad. Google lists replying to reviews as one of its tips for local ranking, and a calm reply to a complaint often does more for trust than ten five-star ratings.

    Photos, posts and products

A profile with real photos looks open for business. Add your storefront, so people can find you from the street, plus the interior, your team at work and your products.

Use posts for offers, events and news, and fill in the products or services section with prices where you can. Every complete field is another chance to match a search.

    Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should match across your profile, your website, Facebook, Instagram and any directories you're listed in. Conflicting details make Google less confident about which is right.

Your website does a lot of the heavy lifting here. A fast site with clear service pages, your address in the footer and structured data describing your business helps Google connect the site to the profile. That's part of our SEO and analytics work, along with answer engine optimisation so AI search tools describe your business correctly.

    A 30-day plan for a new profile

If you're starting from nothing, this order gets the most done in the first month:

    • Week 1: search for an existing listing, claim or create the profile, choose the category, and set the name, address or service area, hours, phone and website. Request verification.
    • Week 2: while you wait (postcard codes can take up to 14 days), write the description and services list, and upload at least ten real photos: storefront, interior, team and products.
    • Week 3: once verified, send a review request to your last 20 or 30 customers by WhatsApp or email, with the direct link. Reply to every review that comes in.
    • Week 4: publish your first post, add public holiday hours for the next quarter, and check that your website, Facebook and directory listings show the same name, address and phone number.

After that, keep a simple habit: one post and one round of review requests every month, and replies to every review within a few days.

Doing it yourself vs paying for help

Most small businesses can run their own profile. Setting it up is free and takes an afternoon, and keeping it current takes a few minutes a week.

Pay for help when you have several locations, a suspended profile, or competitors who already invest seriously in local search. Our SEO cost guide covers what local SEO costs in both markets. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your profile, get in touch.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Google says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. You only pay if you choose to run Google Ads or hire someone to manage the profile for you.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a shop address?
Yes, if you serve customers at their location. Google's guidelines say service-area businesses should hide their address and set the areas they serve instead.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Common causes include adding extra keywords to the business name, using an address you don't operate from, or duplicate listings. Fix the issue against Google's guidelines first, then request reinstatement through the Business Profile support flow.
How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?
New or newly optimised profiles often see changes within a few weeks, but it depends on competition and distance. Steady reviews, complete details and a strong website matter more over time than any one-off change.
