What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI search tools like Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity quote it as the answer. It relies on direct answers near the top of the page, question-shaped headings, sourced facts, and solid technical SEO underneath.

    AEO vs SEO: what's different

SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. AEO aims to get your words, and ideally your name and link, inside the answer an AI tool writes. When there's no list to rank in, being the quoted source is the visibility that's left.

The two overlap more than the new acronym suggests. Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal search. No special schema, no AI text files.

So AEO isn't a replacement for SEO. It's SEO plus writing that a machine can lift cleanly: clear answers, clear structure, and facts worth citing.

    Why answer engines matter now

AI answers now sit on top of a large share of searches. Alphabet said in July 2025 that AI Overviews had over 2 billion monthly users across more than 200 countries and territories, and that AI Mode had over 100 million monthly active users in the U.S. and India.

Those answers change how people click. A Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it didn't. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary itself.

Longer questions trigger AI answers far more often. In the same study, just 8% of one or two word searches produced an AI summary, but 53% of searches with 10 or more words did. That's exactly how people ask about prices, timelines and "which should I choose" decisions.

    AEO in Malaysia and India

Both markets have the features, and in more than English. Google added Malay to AI Overviews in its May 2025 expansion, and called India one of its biggest markets for them.

India has moved furthest. In October 2025 Google brought AI Mode to Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, on top of Hindi, and launched Search Live for voice and camera questions in India first outside the U.S.

For a business, that means two things. Customers may ask their question in Hindi, Tamil or Malay rather than English, so publish in the languages they search in. And they ask in full sentences, so answer full questions rather than chasing two-word keywords.

How to optimise for answer engines

Everything below also helps normal rankings. None of it is a trick.

    1. Answer first. Put a 40 to 60 word answer to the page's main question at the top, then open each section with its own one or two sentence answer. The first paragraph of this post is an example.
    2. Use question-shaped headings. Match how people ask: "How much does an app cost in Malaysia?" rather than "Pricing considerations". Sales calls and WhatsApp enquiries are the best source of real questions.
    3. Cite sources and add numbers. A KDD 2024 study on generative engine optimisation found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved a source's visibility in AI answers by 30% to 40%. Keyword stuffing, the same study found, did little or nothing.
    4. Add structured data that matches the page. FAQPage, Article and Organization markup help machines read your page. Google doesn't require it for AI features, and it must mirror what's visible, but it removes guesswork.
    5. Let the crawlers in. Check that robots.txt doesn't block Googlebot, and decide on purpose whether to allow GPTBot, PerplexityBot and similar bots. Snippet controls like nosnippet also limit how Google can use your text in AI features.
    6. Be the original source. Engines prefer to cite where a fact came from. Local prices, first-hand process detail and your own data beat a rewrite of someone else's article. Our website cost guide for Malaysia and India is built that way.
    7. Keep it fresh. Show the published and updated dates, and fix stale numbers. An outdated price is a reason not to quote you.
    8. Be consistent about who you are. The same business name, description and details on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories help engines connect the dots.

Example: rewriting a section for answer engines

Many business sites hide their answers. Here's a typical pricing section, and the same section rewritten so an answer engine can quote it.

    Before:

Every project is unique, so we tailor our pricing to your needs. Contact us for a customised quote.

    After:

Most five to ten page company websites cost RM6,000 to RM15,000 from a small studio in Malaysia, or ₹80,000 to ₹1,50,000 in India. The price depends mainly on custom design, the number of languages, and features like bookings or payments.

The rewrite answers the question buyers type into search, with numbers, a market and the factors that move the price. An AI tool asked "how much does a website cost in Malaysia" can lift that paragraph whole. The first version gives it nothing to quote, so it quotes someone else.

    How to measure AEO

There's no single AEO dashboard yet, so combine three signals.

    • Search Console. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Performance report under the "Web" search type. It isn't broken out separately, so watch trends on the pages you've optimised.
    • Referral traffic. In your analytics, look for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. The numbers are small for most sites, but they grow.
    • Manual checks. Once a month, ask your ten most important customer questions in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Note who gets cited. It's slow, but it's the most direct read you'll get.

    What AEO can't do

It can't guarantee a citation. AI tools pick from pages they already trust, and big platforms take a large share: Pew found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit made up 15% of the sources listed in AI summaries.

Small businesses win on specific questions the giants don't answer well: local prices, local regulations, niche comparisons, first-hand experience. That's where to focus.

AEO is part of our SEO and analytics work, and it's cheapest to add while a site is being built, before the structure is set. If a build is coming up, our guide on how long it takes to build a website covers when to plan it. To see where your site stands today, get in touch.

    Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, yes. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the term researchers use for getting cited in AI-generated answers. AEO is the marketing term for the same goal, sometimes also covering featured snippets and voice assistants. The practical steps are the same.
Do I need an llms.txt file for AEO?
It's optional. Google says you don't need AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. An llms.txt file is cheap to add and may help some AI tools understand your site, but it won't make up for weak content.
    Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AI answers are built from pages that are indexed and trusted, which is what SEO earns. AEO adds a writing and structure layer on top: direct answers, question headings, cited facts and clean markup.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Google's AI features draw on its normal index, so improvements usually show after pages are recrawled, from a few days to a few weeks. Earning citations on competitive questions takes longer and depends on how much authority your site has built.
